Run For it! – 4. The FEAR System

So far, I’ve looked at the feel-good brain systems of SEEKING, CARE and PLAY. Now it’s time to delve into the more aversive brain systems, starting with FEAR.

Horses, as flight animals, have strong FEAR systems. This comes out in training as anxiety, spooking, bolting and more. So, what’s actually going on and how can your training help your horse build confidence?

  1. Hi Rachel:
I’m really enjoying this series. The freeze/flight exactly describes my mule Tuff’s behavior. As we’ve been working on beginning targeting at liberty, I’ve seen none of it. It feels so much better for both of us.

    Thanks
    Connie

  2. that video was so thought provoking-its made me quite upset to think how regular training -negative re-inforcement -operates and at a regular riding school/livery yard its never questioned. I thank god for C T and all you guys. As horse owners we have such a responsibility for not just the physical well being of these beautiful animals but there emotional and spiritual well being also .Ive learned more about my horses in the last few months than the 20 + years of owning them.

Thanks Bee and I agree completely about general horse training. Well I reckon we’re changing the world, one horse at a time. My goal is a clicker in every tack room!
