Young horses can find wearing a halter and leadrope pretty scary at first and can panic and pull back and fight against it. Which is exactly what this lovely 3 yo mare was doing… Until reward-based training made it clear and fun for her!
It was a bit of a challenge – I was given only 3 days to teach this mare to lead as her owners had to lead all their horses several miles up the road to a new field. At this point, she’d had plenty of liberty handling but would pull back whenever anyone put pressure on the rope. And so, with the help of my trusty old target and good bit of reinforcement, Red learned how to walk, stop and turn. In fact, her owners reported that she was one of the easiest to lead to the new field! Result 🙂
