If your horse gets anxious, spooky, distracted or disconnected when you leave home, youβre not alone. And this new video is for you.
In it, Iβm sharing the very first training step I use to teach any horse how to head out calmly, confidently, and in true partnership with their human.
Itβs a simple but powerful groundwork exercise that builds trust and connection right from the start, and it forms the foundation whether your goal is to lead out or ride out.
When Iβm preparing a horse to hack out under saddle, I always begin with this kind of groundwork. It helps your horse feel safe and regulated in new environments and makes sure they’re calm and connected as soon as they leave the gate.
It’s very do-able and is shown with my donkey, Cerise, the first time she left home on her own, and you can see how much her confidence grew in this one short session.
