Working with spooky or reactive horses can be tricky because it can lead to big behaviours like spinning, spooking, bolting and rearing. Obviously, we donβt want our horses to be feeling anxious and scared, and it can be unsafe and scary for us to handle them, too.
Many more traditional training techniques arenβt so effective at despooking because they require adding in pressure, for example as swinging a rope to get a horse over a tarp or obstacle, or using more leg or a whip when riding a horse into spooky corner or past something scary out hacking.
This can simply add MORE tension into the equation, making horses even more worried. Sometimes, horses learn to control their behaviour as much as possibleβ¦. until they canβt, then you can get unexpected big explosions that seem to come out of nowhere, or escalate very quickly. Either way, itβs not pleasant for either you or your horse to be fighting each other through that fear.
Positive reinforcement is incredibly effective at reducing fear as it changes the emotions of the horse to curiosity and confidence. Iβve worked with so many horses who have become so much calmer, more relaxed and connected to their humans through this work.
Even better, itβs actually enjoyable for both you and your horse to work through despooking exercises using CT AND you build your commication, connection and trust in each other as youβre doing so.
Check out these videos where I give you my top 3 tips for training spooky or reactive horses gently, softly and effectively – with tons of examples (as always)
In the CT Club, Iβve created a step-by-step, easy-to-follow Foundation Course which takes you through all the first lessons in CT. Youβll learn exactly how to set up training sessions, how to adapt the training for your horse, see real-life horses and humans learning these techniques and can watch full-length, unabridged training sessions with me, too.
When you join the Club, you also get instant access to ALL the Courses, which contain hundreds of videos on training well, pretty much anything, so you can find inspiration and solutions for any behaviour you want to train.
YOU get support, too. We have a friendly, supportive (honestly, itβs lovely place), private forum and FB group where you can share your questions and videos and will get support from a certified CT Coach. You can join monthly study groups for more guidance, feedback and group learning. You can talk to me and Rachel directly in our 2 zoom Q&As each month. So, youβll never be stuck for help if you need it, and weβll celebrate your success with you, too.
This is all INCLUDED in the CT Club, which makes it a bit of a bargain really.
Membership is monthly, and you can join for as long or as short as you like – you can pause, resume or cancel your membership from directly within your account.
If you have ANY questions, just email us at theteam@connectiontraining.comΒ and we’ll be happy to help.
